A beautiful quality Arts and Crafts cabinet circa 1910. Cupboard has a solid oak top with a moulded edge above a very crisp high relief dental cornice.
There are 2 doors below with an unusual multiple panel formation- 8 shaped and raised chamfered panels per door different shapes and sizes- quite unusual. The small central panel to each door has crisply carved acorns- to compliment the oak construction of the cupboard. Right hand door has a brass handle, once copperised- some traces of the copper colour can still be seen. Cabinet stands on a moulded square plinth. The interior is unusual, it seems to be a combination of part storage for stationery and part bookcase.
The top section has a fixed shelf with 2 large pigeon hole spaces and a stationery compartment to the left with pull out slides- the slides are shaped to the front to provide finger holes to pull them open- the rear of the shelves are the same- nice sign of quality. Pull outs have neat dove tail construction. Below the top compartment there are 3 adjustable shelves- adjust by moving the shelves up or down the "teeth" to the sides. Doors have original brass hinges. The left hand door bolts top and bottom.
On the left hand door there is a lock and key just about working. Cabinet is high quality, the grain in the oak is very visible to the front and the interior of the panelled doors in particular- you can see the cross cut and the medulla grain.Back and shelves are in beech. Lovely colour and finish- light wax finish. There are marks of use, some marks to the top- probably heat marks, there has been what looks like minimal water damage to the plinth at some time. This has resulted in the texture of the plinth to be a bit rougher than the rest of the cabinet-(the waxed finish is very smooth to the touch), and the oak is slightly darker in colour. Overall a lovely quality cabinet, a good example of Arts and Crafts period.
Very useful and attractive and a good size- not too deep. Width 117 max across the top. Max depth across the top 37 cm.
Width at the plinth 115 cm. Viewing is welcome by appointment, please contact me to arrange.
