This absolutely unique and beautiful Arts and Craft, Gothic revival handled box was created as a one off piece produced to demonstrate a firms artistic and technical capabilities, a fight back against the mass production and industrialization associated with the Victorian era. This one of a kind decorative Victorian box was produced by W. Lindsay and Co Art Metal Works, Paddington, South Warf, London. William Henry Lindsay and Co ran an iron works in the South Warf area of London until 1882. Little is known about his activities, we have not been able to find another example of his work. This handmade box is constructed from wood and features very ornate iron strap work detailing; we see the two large scrolling strap hinges, a wonderful serpent entwined handle and a fully working clasp lock mechanism. Measuring: Width 9 2/8 inch (23.5 cm) by height with handle up 9.5 inch (24 cm). Depth 2 7/8 inch (7.5 cm). The box is in good condition, there is a small cosmetic screw missing from one of the hinges, this does not affect the strength of the hinge. There are two small spots of glue on one of the screws on the front of the box.
The interior of the box has at some point in the past most likely been re-lined and re-varnished. The box will display excellently, a truly unique item from the Arts and Crafts movement.
