This is such a beautiful necklace, dating from c1900 and demonstrating well many of the superb design features of the Arts and Crafts movement in England. Most unusually, the pendant is stamped on the reverse with a diamond shape containing four letters AAGH, would probably mean one of the Guild of Handicrafts operating at that time. However the letters could be read in a different order, making it AGHA??There are so many lovely touches and I love the way that the designer has mixed both faceted and cabochon amethysts This gives it a depth of colour, as well as a lightness from the faceted stones. The pendant is roughly square shaped. It has a large, oval amethyst cabochon mounted in the centre, in a rub-over setting with a rope work detail at the base. There are four smaller oval, cabochons set at the N, S, E & W points, also with rope work detailing. In between each, lies a bezel set round faceted amethyst... In each of the four corners of the silver panel, lies a design of three stylised leaves and stems. The leaves are almost heart shaped in design. The pendant is finished off elegantly with a teardrop shaped amethyst dangler. There is a lovely hand crafted rope twist bale, which would allow for quite a chunky A&C chain. On the reverse, as well as having a very clear maker's stamp (one of the Guilds), you can see the hand crafted, coiled silver work which connect the bale and the dropper to the main part of the pendant.
It is an exquisite piece of work and a joy to look at! In very good condition, as you can see.
A tiny fleabite from the amethyst at the N position, visible with loupe, but it's at the bottom of the stone and not clear to see. At 110 years old-she is doing very well indeed. Length of the chain is approx 46cm (18 inches) and the pendant section is approx 6cm.
A fabulous and rare piece of history, which is light and feminine, whilst making a huge statement! It will be sent by courier, to ensure both speed and security. Many thanks and please do ask if you have any further questions. Please note the box is for display purposes only and the necklace will be securely boxed in another box for safe passage.
