Reclaimed from a period property in Lancashire, this Thomas Jeckyll fireplace from the mid-late 1800s is a very rare and special piece of architectural heritage. We are not aware of any other fireplace of this design in existence. It has been professionally stripped, gently restored, given a protective coating and polished to show off its original and unique character. During restoration we were able to preserve the original mantle and replaced the fireback and bars with an almost identical arrangement from the same period. The finished result looks superb, as you can see from the photos. He designed everything from buildings to bridges, but furniture, and in particular fireplaces, were his speciality. His inspirational Anglo-Japanese designs blazed a trail for much of the arts and crafts movement, and particularly the aesthetic movement. His fireplaces and those of Barnard, Bishop and Barnards, carry distinctive and unmistakable markings, including four bees gathered within a circular motif, the letter N (for Norfolk) within a roundel made up of four letters B (For Barnard, Bishop and Barnards) as well as an array of geometric circular patterns.

This particular fireplace carries all these markings, including a couple of striking gargoyles within the corbel decorations on each shoulder. The casting on the centre of the frieze is supremely crisp and clean, as are all of the roundels and leafy corbels. As with all of our restorations this piece will carry very well concealed signs of the restoration work, but this just adds to the character of the piece in our view. We undertook a small repair to the bottom of the leg on this fireplace and used a heatproof compound on the back of the fireback (out of sight) to seal the joins. Neither of these are apparent on pics.

108cm high from floor to top of mantle. 84cm wide at the mantle. 62cm wide at the body, widening to 64.5cm. To fit your chimney breast opening, the hole in the wall needs to be a minimum of 41cm wide x 58cm high x 21cm deep. There are discreet countersunk holes just beneath the mantle, enabling the fireplace to be secured to the chimney breast wall without any lugs on show.
