A truly stunning and particularly rare British c1930 Arts and Crafts necklace, which shows elements of the Birmingham School of design. What a beauty and a rarity! These pieces are so hard to come by now....
This one had been attributed previously to Sibyl Dunlop however, the leaves, flowers and tiny forget-me-not flowers which are interspersed throughout the design make me think more of Bernard Instone. It certainly has identical features to an earlier jabot pin, also attributed to Instone. This is a fabulous jewel, without doubt, and so unusual. I adore the mixture of stones and the complexity of the piece.
You have two pendants in one, as the stones are different on each side of the pendant. The carved agate flower used as the main focal point of this necklace, is so reminiscent of that era-the 1930s. The agate is decorated at the top by silver leaves an clusters of flowers. On one side of the pendant are cabochons of carnelian, pink chalcedony and chrysoprase.
The other side has gems set in different positions to its reverse and this time they are amethyst, jade and moonstone. This main pendant is attached to a smaller detailed link, with a moonstone and two leaves on either side. Moving upwards is another nod to the Art Deco with a lovely chrysoprase "bead" with a slice of faceted rock crystal sandwiched between the two halves. At the top of this, is a beautiful three circle link with little balls of silver, hinting at the Birmingham School. The fabulously intricate and long!!!
Arts and Crafts chain is attached at this point, each side having a carnelian bead with a faceted slice of rock crystal on either side of it. The photos do simply not do it justice. In wonderful condition generally, only two of the tiny links do not have the central silver ball-absolutely not noticeable at all and if it did bother you, it would take a jeweller seconds to take them out of the chain.
Stones are all intact and are not worn at all-superb condition! The chain measures as approx 108cm (42 inches).
You can wear it long or wrap it around your neck to give a choker effect, as well as still having the pendant viewed on a long chain. The pendant drop measures approx 9.5cm.It is all linked and therefore, articulated... Please note that I will send the necklace by International courier, for both security and speed.
