A very handsome medium oak coloured desk by Shapland and Petter of Barnstaple. Although quite compact, the desk has lots of storage space, comprising 4 drawers on the pedestal of graduated depth, a wider kneehole drawer, a sloping writing surface that opens to reveal further storage and two smaller drawers on the gallery. Condition is excellent apart from a small bracket to the bottom right hand side that sometimes produces a small gap.
This is easily remedied by tapping and in no way detracts from look or stability of this very solid and beautifully made piece. All fittings are completely original apart from the leather tooling that has been applied later, but in a way that is very sympathetic to the desk. The inverted love hard pendant handles on the small drawers are a common feature of SPB pieces from this period. Internal lock plates from drawers have been removed at some stage, presumably because they had the sought after SPB stamp. This, of course, is not visible from outside the desk and all the drawers function perfectly. Patination is lovely with the oak emanating a warm glow.
Of course, this desk could be easily restored for a much lighter oak colour and there are examples on a google image search of this S&P desk to give you an idea of how it might look. Height to top of gallery: 92cm.This is a very handsome period desk from one of the most famous cabinet makers of the British Arts and Crafts movement. It has lovely quarter sawn graining and proportions and workmanship are as you would expect from this maker. This item is for courier collection only.
