Arts and Crafts Sterling Silver Ruskin Pottery Brooch by Renowned Birmingham Silversmith Albert Carter. Simply Superb Arts and Crafts Ruskin Enamel Brooch set in Solid Sterling Silver and made by one of the most famous and respected Silversmiths in the Birmingham Jewellery Quarter Albert Carter. A very rare item by an important Arts and Crafts Silversmith. Albert Carter Studied for many years at the Birmingham School of Arts and Crafts along with many of the great names of the English Arts and Crafts Movement. In 1900 he opened his own workshop and rapidly gained acclaim as one of the finest Arts and Crafts enamellers and Silversmiths working on commissions for Queen Victoria and other greats of the day. A notable piece being the Alms dish for Malmesbury Abbey. Eventually being Appointed Silversmith to Queen Mary (see below).

The brooch measures 36 mms in diameter approximately 1 1/2 inches but has a huge presence with a lovely substantial feel. The simple Medieval style Silver mount decorated with shamrocks reminiscent of Chivalric Knight's Pennants. It looks like something straight out of a pre-raphaelite painting by Waterhouse or Meteyard who incidentally Albert Carter actually was associated with. The Iridescent Peacock-Hued'Ruskin Pottery' Enamel plaque gives this solid Sterling Silver Brooch an extra rich Jewel like quality that shimmers like butterfly wings. Priced accordingly for the importance of the maker and museum scarcity of the piece.

Mr Albert Carter, of Birmingham, has just been honoured by the granting of a royal warrant appointing him silversmith to Queen Mary. This is the first time for many years that a member of the jewellery trade has received a royal warrant and the first time on record that it has been granted to an individual silversmith in Birmingham. Queen Mary has been keenly interested in Mr. Carters work in silver and enamel for a number of years and he has carried out numerous special orders for her and for King George V. Of 1924, Queen Mary has made a point of visiting Mr Carters stand and inspecting all the articles he displayed.

Mr Carter is chairman of the art and technical committee of the B J A and also of the Exhibition Committee. He is a former President. The brooch is in excellent condition, having been treasured by me and any other previous owner as one of their favourite pieces.

Would make a very precious Stocking Filler and Christmas Gift for someone. These Arts and Crafts pieces of silver continue to hold their own as lovely collectable pieces of British Arts and Crafts jewellery from the Early 20th century and can only continue to become more sought after.
