Antique Arts and Crafts Nouveau Brooch Murrle Bennett Gold Turquoise MOP (5965)
Antique Arts and Crafts / Art Nouveau brooch. 9k gold, turquoise matrix and mother of pearl. Made by Murrle Bennett, England, circa 1900. Measurements: Just under 1 1/2 inches (34mm) long. Classic Arts & Crafts design and sentiment. Materials used are 9k gold, mother of pearl and turquoise matrix, very popular with this movement and typified by Liberty & Co. The central mother of pearl oval, collet-set in gold that metamorphosises into a whiplash design of overlapping, intertwining Celtic knots and hearts.
On either side are scrolling vine leaves with twirling tendrils and at the bottom, a loop link suspends a turquoise drop. C- clasp, original to the brooch. Marks: back is marked 9ct and with the Murrle Bennett maker's mark. The back of the central MOP medallion is hand engraved with numerals, that might be the personal code of a previous owner and are very difficult to read.
