Antique Arts & Crafts Sterling Silver And Opaline Brooch. Zoltan White & Co - c.
This is a beautiful little brooch, made by the highly collected U. Based Austro-Hungarian jeweller, Zoltan White & Co. The piece is marked to the reverse side with'Made in England' -'Silver' (in this case, sterling silver), and ZW&Co for Zoltan White.
I'm not aware of this maker ever using full U. The brooch is very typically Austro-Hungarian in style, with flower motifs and a multi gem setting. The gems used have an opal like quality, and a gorgeous pink / lilac colour play. From what I can see, the stones appear to be foil backed, for extra sparkle. The stones have a different colour appearance depending on the lighting or angle you look at them, and one of the tiny stones set within the flower looks more blue / green than the others. Despite their appearance, I actually believe they are opaline, a synthetic lab created stone, but the colour play across all of them is lovely!
Surprisingly little is known of Zoltan White's life considering the quality of his work and how prized it is. He was born in Hungary in the 19th century and trained as a jeweller in Budapest. He later moved to England and produced a variety of rings, pendants, earrings and brooches, in his familiar style, from circa 1910 until the late 1940's.
The reverse side of the brooch has tube hinge and roll over safety clasp, which is perfectly correct for the era of around 1930. I've always thought that this would make a beautiful pendant, with the addition of a suspension loop to one end - a good jeweller should be able to do this if it's something you'd consider. The brooch measures approximately 3.5cm x 2.3cm - the unpacked weight is 9.3g. The condition of the item is generally very good, with no major faults to report. Naturally, this piece is around 90 years old, and in that respect there are normal signs of use and wear commensurate with its age. The main central stone has some very light scratching / scuffing to the surface, but this is minor enough that it can only be seen under magnification. The silver parts are all in good order, and the stones are securely set. Both the hinged pin and clasp on the reverse work exactly as they should.
Altogether, a very nice and very collectable piece! Please study the images provided to satisfy yourself as to the condition of the item offered - if you have any further questions, please ask!
