Arts and Crafts Drop Leaf Table. Offered for sale a quality English 1940s Oak drop leaf gate leg table made in the Cotswold school style.
Once fully opened the table forms a solid top with rounded chamfered edges sitting on a carved frame, featuring exposed tenons. The Cotswold School was a development of the Arts, and Craft Movement started primarily by Ernest Gimson and the brothers Sidney and Ernest Barnsley. The furniture is instantly recognisable with its simple lines, attention to the finest of details, and use of beautiful materials.
Cotswold School designs were crafted from local materials using traditional tools and techniques and with decorative details derived mainly from functional elements: exposed joinery, unusual panels, paying close attention to form, and wood grain and pattern. Decorative details were added and generally took the form of conventional embellishment of the sort; for example, the long chamfers, chip-carved edges that are often featured. The furniture nearly always had attractive pull handles and latches crafted either from wood or metal, when the craftsmen used metal traditional smithing techniques to make metal handles. 80 D x 78 H x 82 W.
