It also comes in its own original fitted box. Rare for many reasons and an absolute collectors' dream. This is the most sumptuous example of British Arts and Crafts design. Ethel Pye trained at the Slade School of Art in London, as an artist who went on to become a sculptor. One or two examples of her work exist-she sculpted mainly in bronze and in wood.
I have never seen a piece of jewellery by her so the rarity continues. I wonder whether this was a private commission for a friend who was marrying perhaps? Ethel and her sister, Sybil, were members of a literary group that included Rupert Brooke and Virginia Woolf.Very little is documented about Ethel so she remains little researched. I was able to find one photo of her online, and it is evident she was a beautiful lady, clearly in love with her art. She exhibited numerous times in Kensington exhibitions in London. I believe her nephew has gone on to be a rather successful designer himself, creating water sculptures for various grand projects around the world. This fabulous tiara is a museum piece-rare, in its original box signed with the details of "ETHEL PYE, LIMPSFIELD, SURREY". It is a magnificent design in silver with large oval, domed cabochons of moonstones.... With a fabulous blue shimmer to them. The main section at the front of the tiara has four moonstones and some crossed leaves interspaced between them. Beautiful Arts and Crafts leaves wind their way along the tiara until you come to another bezel set moonstone with crossed leaves.... More leaves further down and then the final moonstone set with tiny bell type of flowers. More leaves until you reach the end of the tiara, which is also shaped like a leaf.
This is a rare and rather magical piece of British Arts and Crafts history. It would be delightful for collectors and equally, I cannot imagine how excited a potential bride would be to receive this rarity... Something old and something blue.
I will post the boxed tiara by courier to ensure its safety during transit. The fitted box is, of course, included. It does close but needs a tweak perhaps to stay shut.
