Bamboo grows mainly in Asia, although can be found in Austraila & Central and South America. There are records of people growing and using bamboo for tools, musical instruments and building materials in China as early as 7000 years ago.

European explorers brought the material, which is actually a form of grass, back home from Asia. As it was so associated with far-off and exotic climes, it instantly became a status symbol for families looking to impress their social circle. During the late Victorian era bamboo furniture was very fashionable, particularly associated with the Arts and Crafts movement. The Arts and Crafts movement was an international trend in the decorative and fine arts that developed earliest and most fully in the British Isles and subsequently spread across the British Empire and to rest of Europe and America.

Initiated in reaction against the perceived impoverishment of the decorative arts and the conditions in which they were produced. It was inspired by the ideas of architect Augustus Pugin, writer John Ruskin, designer William Morris, and in Scotland architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh.
